TEDxPortofSpain Will Go “Off The Record” as They Celebrate Five Years

TEDxPortofSpain is approaching its fifth year—a milestone accomplishment but still a small step towards the grand vision of making a change in Trinidad and Tobago.

What began as a movement to “change the conversation” in 2011, turned into conversations of “courage” in 2012. In 2013 TEDxPortofSpain continued the movement by encouraging everyone to “connect” and last year, they reflected on moving from a conversation to “doing, undoing and re-doing”.

Over the last four years, TEDxPortofSpain attracted some of the most innovative, creative, and forward-thinking doers and change makers in the country. This year TEDxPortofSpain is proud to celebrate its fifth event in a brand new location.

The momentum is set to continue further towards a positive change for Trinidad & Tobago and for the rest of the world. On October 14, 2015, hundreds of Trinidad & Tobago’s opinion leaders and impassioned TEDx fans will come together for a day of networking and dialogue for the fifth TEDxPortofSpain event. This exciting mission-filled and action-oriented gathering will be held at the Queens Hall Auditorium in the heart of Port of Spain.

This year’s event will embark on a journey filled with stories, songs, lessons-learned and the inspiration from a deep exploration of doing. Attendees will have an opportunity to engage, discuss and network during lunch which will be served onsite.

The theme for TEDxPortofSpain 2015 is “Off Record”–Conversations that are NECESSARY, but ignored because we are too afraid to discuss due to its “sensitive”nature. In other words, conversations that are considered “taboo”.

“Off the record”, is a figure of speech referring to conversations unintended to be shared publicly.

“Our ethos is to foster the conversation on ideas that matter and share theses ideas publicly. In many circumstances, the ideas and desired action, involves subject matter that ARE taboo,” says Keita Demming,TEDxPortofSpain licensee and lead event organizer.

TEDxPortofSpain (www.tedxportofspain.com), an independently produced event operated under a licence from TED, is aimed at creating dialogue and action. This event is made possible through the partnership between Demming Communications www.demmingcommunications.com and licensee holder Keita Demming, Director and founder of Village Seed Solutions www.villageseedsolutions.com.

About TEDxPortofSpain

In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading,” TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, selforganized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxPortofSpain, where x = independently organized TED event. At TEDxPortofSpain, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today’s leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED’s annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

TED’s open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; The Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a “wish,” or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
