TEDx Port of Spain: Connecting in Port of Spain, Trinidad
On November 30, 2013, hundreds of Trinidad & Tobago’s opinion leaders and impassioned TEDx fans will come together for a day of networking and dialogue for the third annual TEDxPortofSpain event. This exciting mission-filled and action-oriented gathering is expected to fill the Central Bank Auditorium in the heart of Port of Spain and will feature an impactful and inspiring line up of speakers.
Last year, TEDxPortofSpain attracted some of the most innovative, creative, and forward-thinking doers and changemakers in the country. Eight guest presenters spoke to a sold out audience who dared to dream of a better Port of Spain. This year, the momentum is set to continue towards positive change for Trinidad & Tobago and for the rest of the world.
TEDxPortofSpain is an independently-produced event operated under a license from TED; it is aimed at creating dialogue and action. This event is made possible through the partnership among Demming Communications, Inglefield/Ogilvy and Mather Caribbean Limited, Abovegroup and TEDx license holder Keita Demming, Director and Founder of VillageSeed Solutions.
The theme for TEDxPortofSpain 2013 is ‘Connecting’. We are reminded of a famous quotation by Chief Seattle – “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” We will embark on a journey filled with stories, songs and lessons-learned and the inspiration of those who have demonstrated what is possible when we begin connecting.
TEDxPortofSpain will feature 9 guest speakers all of whom have contributed significantly in various areas of practice from technology, entertainment, design, and environmental sustainability. The speakers include, inter alia:
- Wayne Kublalsingh
- Atillah Springer
- Etienne Charles
- Dominique Le Gendre
- Gabrielle Hosein
- Stacy-Marie Ishmael

About TEDxPortofSpain
In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading”, TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, selforganized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxPortofSpain, where x = independently-organized TED event. At TEDxPortofSpain, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “ideas worth spreading”. It started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago; TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference which takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal which is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.
TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.
TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action. TEDx offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world. The TED Fellows program helps world-changing innovators from around the globe become part of the TED community and with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
