Amílcar Sanatan

Amílcar Sanatan’s promise is to deliver everything in life with slight pepper. He is a Poet, Activist, and emerging Caribbean Scholar whose voice on issues resonates with national and regional audiences. From the “business-suited-elite” to the “slogan-T-shirted-youth” he focuses his penetrating eyes on ways to exchange ideas.

His emblematic tattooed sleeves and long dreads have stood at the forefront of the social and creative arts movements where he helped choreograph its forward movement. Between 2008-2011, he chaired U.WE SPEAK, the largest open-mic for the creative arts nationally. Later, he was elected President of the UWI Guild of Students. As a student leader, he was known for his public identification with feminism and open lecture series “Reasonings” which promoted inter-faith dialogue, popular culture debates, sexual diversity, and environmental consciousness. In 2011, he received the National Youth Award for Leadership from the then named, Ministry of Gender, Youth and Child Development.

Amílcar’s research and creative productions explore notions of development justice and transforming masculinities for peace-building. He is currently a postgraduate student and lecturer on development studies at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus as well as the coordinator of the UWI Socialist Student Conference promoting foundational education in radical Caribbean social, economic, cultural and political thought.
